Gillford Park have announced that they will travel to the Hall Lane home of Wearside Leaguers Willington on July 28th 2007, in what is currently scheduled as their second pre-season friendly. Our hosts have a long established pedigree in the North East, having first entered the Northern League in 1911. They won it on three occasions in the late twenties, and reached their pinnacle in the immediate pre and post war years as they reached the final of the Amateur Cup on two occasions, winning it, on the second attempt, in 1949, in front a 50,000 crowd at Wembley. Hard times beset the club in more recent years and they were relegated from the second division of the Northern League in 2005. In a desperate attempt to stave off the breweries bank manager they staged a marathon 'drinking session' spanning the whole of their first season in the Wearside League, and under a determined committee are now making moves to reclaim their place in the limelight of North East non-league football. |
