Gillford Park travelled with just twelve players to Cramlington-based outfit, Shankhouse, looking to make amends for last seasons five-two extra time defeat in the League Cup, also at the Northburn Community Pitch on the northern edge of the Northumberland town. Shankhouse, who sit fifteenth in the league betwixt second-bottom Northbank and rivals Carlisle City, were gifted their only goal in the two-one defeat as Gillford's Craig Thomson sent the ball past visiting 'keeper Armstrong, but strikes by Gary Milne and Steve Skinner secured the points for the Park. Manager Jimmy McMurdo played the second half, and his assistant Darren Noctor started the match during which defender Martin Blakey was sent off for a "last man offence", literally translated as "obstructing a clear goal-scoring opportunity". Gillford's only travelling supporter, one Michael Linden, was there by necessity as Secretary, with the rest of the committee and helpers staying in Carlisle to assist with matchday duties as Gillford Park staged a Northern Counties Under-18s Cup match between Cumberland FA and North Riding FA, while the counties' Under 16s teams met each other on the recuperating lesser Gillford Park pitch. Gillford Park now rise to third place in the league, with a game in hand on second placed Heddon, two points ahead. |
