IN FRONT of a very small crowd yesterday afternoon, a lucky deflection in the Heaton box handed Gillford Park the points in the game against Heaton Stannington. Jack Twentyman made a return to the goal in The Park's first game since December 8, but on a very heavy pitch the similarities with that last match against Seaton Delaval were clear to see. On the morning of the game the pitch looked excellent, but downpours in the hours before kick-off left it sodden and heavy, and the pitch cut-up terribly as the game wore on. The ground staff will now be thankful for a two week break 'til our next home game with Northbank, as they attempt to restore the ruined surface. The mark was originally credited to Gillford's Tyron Taylor but later awarded as an own goal when it emerged that Heaton's Daniel Thompson had diverted it into the net. The ball was played in from a corner on the right and Heaton's Aaron Taylor attempted to clear it. However, the ball smacked off the face of team-mate Daniel Thompson and ended up in the back of the net. The goal came twenty minutes after a strong run and good finish from Steve Skinner had given the home side the advantage and all but killed the game, as Heaton's young players accepted defeat and finished an otherwise hard fought game with a whimper.
